Common causes of rollover truck accidents
A rollover truck accident happens when a big rig turns over onto its side or back at least once – often into the path of an oncoming passenger car. The impact of the crash can cause significant damage and even death. Rollovers are difficult to investigate, but our firm is up to the challenge.
Rollover accidents are usually caused when a truck driver takes a curve – such as the sharp turn of a highway off ramp – too quickly. They can also happen if a trucker attempts a hard stop – aka slams on the brakes. Depending on what a trailer is hauling and whether it was loaded correctly, the weight or movement of the cargo combined with the vehicle’s high center of gravity can cause it to roll. The most common reasons for rollover crashes include:
- Trucker negligence. The truck driver may have been speeding or driving recklessly. Some drivers may get distracted by texting or using the onboard computer. Drowsy driving, falling asleep at the wheel, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can increase the risk for rollover truck accidents.
- Lost control of the truck. The truck went wild due to something like driver error, a tire blowout, defective vehicle parts, cargo shift, etc. A trucker has gone over the lane line, driven off the edge or past the end of the road, or made incorrect turning maneuvers at intersections.
- Inexperience. Studies show that, in general, truckers with more time behind the wheel are less at risk of being in an accident than new commercial vehicle drivers.
- Overreaction. Sometimes rollovers are the result of a truck driver overreacting to traffic conditions. Maybe another vehicle made an error. A passenger vehicle causes the truck driver to make a sudden stop or turn by doing something reckless like slamming on their brakes for no reason, traveling in the wrong lane, or backing up without checking for oncoming traffic. A trucker making a sudden move to avoid hitting something or someone may overcorrect the situation. This could throw the vehicle off balance and send it into a rollover crash.
- Striking an outside object. Colliding with an object is not necessary to spur a rollover truck accident. However, when items or infrastructure are a contributing factor in rollovers, the object is typically a curb, guardrail, ditch, or soft soil.
